Convert comma delimited files to Glossaries in Fortis Revolution

From Fortis

If you have created a glossary file in either excel or a text editor you can import it into Fortis Revolution by following these simple steps:

Contents

Step 1: Create a New Dictionary File

You must import into an existing dictionary file. If you do not have an existing dictionary you want to use you can create a new one.

  1. In Semantis choose File->Dictionaries->New
  2. Click the Browse button.
  3. Navigate to the home for your new dictionary file and type a name for the dictionary file.
  4. Click Save. Then Click OK.

Step 2: Create a New Import Script

Each import project with different languages will need a different import script. The below steps assume a tab delimited file where each line is a single term in English, followed by a tab, followed by that term in a target language. This is the most common form, but if your file is different than this you will have to adjust these instructions to suit your situation.

  1. In Semantis choose File->Import...
  2. Under Import Script click the Create... button.
  3. Under Step One (1): Concept Information click the radio button in front of "A new line"
  4. Press Next.
  5. Next through steps 2 and 3.
  6. Under Step Four (4): language Sequence Information select English and rpess the >> button, then the target language and the >> button. The order here is important.
  7. Press Next.
  8. Under Step 5: Filed Information in the drop down choose Tab (>>).
  9. Press Next.
  10. Very Important. Select Trm in the left menu and press the >> button.
  11. Press Finish.
  12. Name and save your import script.

Note: the Very Important step is marked as such because your file is nothing but terms in multiple language. If not marked this way your import will not insert the language information into your dictionary in any useful way.

Step 3: Import the delimited file

  1. If you closed the Import Concepts to Dictionary window from the previous step select File->Import... in Semantis.
  2. Under Import Source press the ... button and select the delimited text file to import.
  3. (If necessary) Under Import Script click Browse. Open the import script created above.
  4. Under Into Dictionary press the ... button and select the new dictionary file created above.
  5. If this is a new dictionary then leave Append selected. If this is a dictionary file that already has terms that you are adding additional translations to select "Merge".
  6. Press Import Data. You should see a message like the following:
  7. Press Done.

Step 4: Start using your new dictionary

  1. In Semantis choose File->Select Dictionaries or press the Select Dictionaries button on the toolbar.
  2. Press the Add... button.
  3. Open your new dictionary.
  4. If necessary press the Activate button.
  5. Press OK.

Alternatively the dictionary can be added in the project settings.
